Service Learning

Service learning encourages students to apply academic knowledge in the context of authentic community service opportunities. Studies have shown that service learning can strengthen student’s academic skills, civic attitudes and skills for active citizenship.

NSA offers a community service program, both local and global in nature, in order to give students a sense of usefulness and purpose as well as promote their personal, social and intellectual growth.

Each year NSA selects 3-5 service learning projects for students to participate in. Identifying projects is a team effort and includes students, parent volunteers and staff. Recent projects include:

• Earth Day – over 600 students, teachers and parents spend the day assisting local businesses with activities ranging from outdoor education to community cleanup and landscape improvements.
• Children’s Hospital
• Parker Adventist Art Show
• The Ronald McDonald House – students prepared and served food to families
• The Joshua House – students helped organize donated clothing and supplies
• Irving Street Shelter for Women – students served lunch and lead games
• Restoration Outreach – students filled 40 “blessing bags” with necessities
