Answers

When is the enrollment deadline?

Please see our Intent to Enroll information for the current deadline dates. https://www.nstaracademy.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=1247807&type=d&pREC_ID=1473742

May I add more than one child on the online Intent to Enroll form?

No. You must submit a separate online Intent to Enroll Form for each prospective student.

What opportunities are there for me to tour the school and meet the administration?

NSA hosts an information meeting for prospective parents on the first Wednesday of September and October. Each fall, NSA hosts a, Kindergarten round-up. You can RSVP to attend any of these special meetings on our School Tours page. (link to Tours )

Is there a tuition charge to attend NSA?

North Star Academy is a tuition-free public charter school. We do not charge tuition for our K-8 students.

How old does my child need to be to enter Kindergarten?

NSA follows the Douglas County School District policy for Kindergarten age requirements. In order to enter Kindergarten, your student must be five (5) years old on or before October 1st of the year they are enrolling.

Do I have to live in the Douglas County School District to be eligible for the NSA lottery?

No. You are not required to live in Douglas County in order to submit an online Intent to Enroll form. However, Douglas County residents will receive first priority in our lottery. Once all Douglas County lottery applicants have been offered any available open spots, we can then offer out of district applicants any remaining spots.

How is the NSA lottery conducted at NSA?

Prospective families must first submit their child’s general information through our online Intent to Enroll system before the enrollment deadline in order to be included in the lottery for the upcoming school year. Parents with siblings of current NSA students are contacted first and offered any available spots for the upcoming school year. If additional spots are still available, our Registrar follows this process for the lottery:

The day of the lottery, all information is automatically downloaded into a spreadsheet, duplicates deleted, and each applicant is assigned a computer-generated random number. Applicants are then arranged in ascending order (smallest number to largest number) and sorted by grade level desired.
The NSA Registrar begins the process of offering available spots beginning with any openings in 6th grade and working down to Kindergarten. If no spots are available for a particular grade, no calls/emails are made.
Once a spot is offered, the family has 24 hours to accept or decline the offer. If the offer is declined, the Registrar offers the spot to the next applicant on the list. If the spot is accepted, the family has five (5) business days to complete the registration paperwork and submit it to the NSA Registrar. This process continues until all available spots are filled for each grade.

How many spots per grade level are offered each year?

KINDERGARTEN – NSA offers four (4) classes of 20 students each for Kindergarten, 2 are Full-Day classes and 2 are Half-Day classes (AM & PM). Each year, these spots are first offered to current students’ siblings, then our current Pre-K students, then the remaining spots are filled from our lottery. The number of lottery spots varies each year.
GRADES 1ST – 5TH – Each grade has three (3) classes of 27 students each, with the exception of 5th grade which has three (3) classes of 26 students each. Any openings which occur in these grades are first offered to current students’ siblings; the remaining spots are filled from our lottery list.
GRADES 6TH – 8TH – Please fill out our online Intent to Enroll form and your student will be put onto our wait list.
IF THERE ARE NO STUDENTS LEAVING OUR SCHOOL FROM ANY PARTICULAR GRADE, THERE WILL BE NO OFFERS MADE FOR THAT GRADE.

When will I know if my child was selected in your lottery?

Due to the number of applicants in our lottery, our Registrar is able to call or email only those being offered a spot. This process of offering spots begins immediately after the lottery. Each applicant offered a spot has 24 hours to accept or decline the offer. If the offer is declined, the next applicant in line is called or mailed. If the offer is accepted, the family has 5 business days to turn in completed registration paperwork. This process can take months and, many times, has gone into the summer months.

If you would like to know the number drawn by your student in the lottery, we ask that you wait approximately two months before calling the school. Spots are offered as quickly as possible, and you may hear from us up to and including September of the new school year.

If my child does not get into NSA this year, do I have to fill out another online Intent to Enroll form for next year?

The NSA online Intent to Enroll form is good for one (1) lottery cycle. If you do not get an offer the first year, you will have to complete a new online Intent to Enroll form to show your continued interest in having your child entered into NSA’s lottery.

What do I do if my information changes?

If any of your information changes (i.e. new address, email address or phone number, etc.), please submit a new online Intent to Enroll form. The most current online Intent to Enroll form will be utilized during our enrollment process and the old one will be removed from our system.
