Happy New Year! NSA is ringing in yet another New Year on a high note. For two consecutive years, our NSA elementary students were awarded the 16th Annual Student Video Contest, given by the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers (CCFLT). Logan Knudson and Lucas Botyarov (second grade students in Mrs. Templin class) created, presented and recorded a video in Spanish demonstrating ACTFL’s World Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. These ambitious second grade students demonstrated their Spanish proficiency by presenting information, concepts, and ideas using media and adapting the narration to various audiences of listeners and viewers. The videos were judged based on comprehensibility, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and language control. Please click here to view NSA winning video.
The winning videos will be showcased at the 2017 CCFLT Spring Conference awards luncheon on February 25th.
As our society becomes more global in nature, it is essential that students are able to communicate in a language other than their own. Today, some of the most sought after careers require foreign language proficiency.
Spanish instruction is an integral part of the curriculum at NSA offering both Spanish language instruction and also teaching children to respect diversity and have a broader appreciation for the world and communities in which we live.
K-5 Program Overview
NSA’s Spanish language program is aligned with the state and national standards of foreign language learning and provides all students with daily instruction beginning in Kindergarten. The program focuses on allowing students to spend time using and interacting with the language, exploring a large range of topics, and making connections between language and content. NSA grade level teachers work closely with the Spanish department to help students achieve Spanish proficiency upon middle school graduation.
Spanish instruction is delivered to students through Comprehensible Input (CI) techniques. All elementary Spanish teachers use TPRS (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling) which is an input-based approach focusing on the systematic instruction of vocabulary in a highly comprehensible, personalized and contextualized manner.
Spanish Culture Day
Each spring NSA hosts a Spanish Culture Day to celebrate the Hispanic culture and to foster learning about the different Spanish-speaking countries. Families and community members are encouraged to attend this special event.
