SOCK MONKEYS
Character Education/Service Learning Project - December 2009
The group "CLOWNS WITHOUT BORDERS" visits children all over the world who are in difficult circumstances. They dress up in costumes and go to orphanages and hospitals to bring a bit of cheer into the lives of those who need it most. After they entertain the children, they give each of them their very own sock monkey.
Our NSA students have been studying the subject of poverty this year. All students will be creating individual sock monkeys to donate to "CLOWNS WITHOUT BORDERS."
Our NSA students are being helped with their sewing skills by many of our NSA mothers who are donating their time and sewing skills to help our Art teacher, Ms. Quintana, with this very worthwhile project. The students are excited to send their uniquely designed sock monkeys to less fortunate children around the world.
Sock monkeys were invented about 90 years ago. The monkeys came from socks made by the Nelson Knitting Company of Rockford, Illinois. They were grey with a red heel. During the Great Depression, some inventive grandmother or mother turned a pair of socks into a little plush toy. These toys were such a hit, they are still made today! As a matter of fact, they are enjoying quite a nostalgic comeback!
